The global economic crisis that has recently emerged, with an uncertain duration and undefined implications, will pose an even tougher test for the cohesion and effectiveness of Europe. Thus, it will be revealed whether Europe truly represents a living political reality.

But what is the overall image of Europe in the world today? An objective assessment is not easy. For now, what can be said is that the wrinkles of Europe, that of a 'woman of a certain age,' appear to be deepening. An aesthetic intervention, a facelift, would not be enough to conceal the wrinkles.

People are saying, some loudly, some quietly, that some adjustment to the structural and functional framework of Europe should be sought in light of new realities and new challenges. In the short-term challenge posed by the economic crisis that has recently manifested, as well as in the long-term challenge represented by globalization.

Both challenges, particularly the latter, call for the governments and peoples of Europe to reconsider whether, in what form, and within what time frame structural changes need to be made. Would a complete overhaul of the European framework be better? Or could a new distinct framework be built? Various thoughts are being heard and discussed.

From such a search for the future of Europe, our country should not be absent.
