Gikas A. CHardouvelis

Gikas A. Hardouvelis is a professor in the Department of Banking and Financial Management at the University of Piraeus and serves as an economic advisor and head of research at the Eurobank EFG Group. He is also a research fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research in London and the head of the Academic Council of the Hellenic Bank Association. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley (1983), and a Master of Science and Bachelor of Arts in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University, Massachusetts, USA (1978). He has served as an assistant professor at Barnard College, Columbia University (1983-1989), and as an associate and then full professor at Rutgers University, New Jersey (1989-1993). From 2000 to 2004, he was the director of the economic office of the Prime Minister, Costas Simitis. He has extensive experience in central banks and the private banking sector: he was an economic advisor to the National Bank of Greece (1994-1995), an economic advisor at the Bank of Greece (1994-1995) where he served as deputy to the governor at the European Central Bank, and a research advisor at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (1987-1993). His scholarly work has been published in prestigious international journals such as the American Economic Review, Journal of Finance, The Review of Financial Studies, The Quarterly Journal of Economics, The Journal of Monetary Economics, The Review of Economics and Statistics, among others. In the past (1989-1995), citations of his scholarly work ranked him among the top 50 globally in the broader field of applied econometrics (see Badi H. Baldagi, "Applied Econometric Rankings: 1989-1995," Journal of Applied Econometrics, 1999). Additionally, his work on margin requirements significantly contributed to the change in the regulatory framework governing futures markets on stock indices in the USA.
