Description

The Dictionary is a mapping of the phenomenon of censorship in Greece through the documentation and critical analysis of emblematic cases. It focuses on the post-dictatorship period, juxtaposing and simultaneously connecting the presence of censorship practices in democracy with their corresponding development during periods of dictatorship and "stunted" democracy.

It is divided into three sections: The first presents the background of censorship in the form of a historical review. Separate studies document censorship in the Press, visual arts, music, literature, etc. The second analyzes the common "areas of censorship," thematic issues where censorious phenomena are systematically identified, such as blasphemy, national issues, pornography, etc.

Focusing on the period from the post-dictatorship era to the present day, this section essentially serves as an introduction as well as an overall consideration of the incidents recorded in the third section, the Dictionary itself, with entries dedicated to censorious events. The third section thoroughly discusses cases that have emerged from 1974 to the present.

Texts and entries are authored by researchers and experts in their respective academic fields, as well as by individuals who have experienced censorship themselves. Overall, the material of the Dictionary covers a wide range of topics from anti-communism to blasphemy, and from Theola of Th. Angelopoulos to the condemnation of "Elder Pastitsios." It thus constitutes a mosaic that provides the reader with material to know, evaluate, re-examine, and assess the modern Greek version of a universal and timeless phenomenon.

Contributors include: Kyriakos Angelakos, Charis Athanasiadis, Giorgos Andritsos, Kostis Antoniadis, Giannis Antonopoulos, Manos Avgeridis, Konstantinos M.
