Giorgos Pleios

George Pleios teaches at the Department of Communication and Media Studies at the University of Athens, while also directing the Laboratory of Social Research in Media. In the past, he has taught at the Universities of Crete and Ioannina. He has authored the following studies: "National Issues in the Whirlwind of the Media" (Sideris, 2011; with Ch. Frangonikolopoulos), "Culture of the Image and Education" (Polytropon, 2005), "The Discourse of the Image: Ideology and Politics" (Papazisis, 2001), "Moving Image and Artistic Communication" (Delfini, 1993). He has published more than 40 scientific papers in Greece and abroad, with the most notable in the past 5 years being: "News in the Blogosphere: New Medium - Old Logics?", "Fame and Symbolic Value in Celebrity Activism and Diplomacy", "Publicity and Private Life within the Greek Blogosphere" (with others), "En Blogs: From the Internet to the Blogosphere", "The Culture of News", "News and Views about Europe in Greece", "Election News Coverage in Greece: Between Two Logics" (with N. Demertzis), "The Projection of Political Institutions by Television News" (with S. Papathanassopoulos), "Content and Quality of Television News", among others. He has also presented more than 40 scientific papers at Greek and international scientific conferences and has conducted over 20 media research projects as a scientific director. His opinions are regularly featured in Greek and international media. His scientific interests lie in the broader field of the sociology of media, particularly visual media, and in recent years, he has been focusing his research and writing on news.
