Description

Description

The fertile and genre-broad directorial work of Spyros A. Evangelatos (1940-2017), documented in over two hundred productions of theatre and opera, undoubtedly left a strong imprint on the contemporary stage.

As one of the leading reformers of the art of theatre in Greece, he embarked on bold experiments in the revival of ancient drama and has stamped the Epidaurus Festival with his decades-long presence. He systematically explored the classical repertoire, offering modern and innovative stage interpretations, and proposed new directorial and interpretative directions in his productions of lyrical theatre.

He tirelessly and passionately highlighted earlier Greek literature by staging texts (both theatrical and otherwise) that were very difficult and very rarely presented. With the international tours of his personal troupe, Amphi-Theatre, he succeeded in bringing modern Greek theatrical creation to about thirty cities across five continents.

Along with his academic and teaching activities (Emeritus Professor at the University of Athens, member and President of the Academy of Athens) and the direction of significant artistic organizations (General Director of the National Theatre of Northern Greece, General Director and President of the National Opera, and President of the Greek Centre of the International Theatre Institute), he put forth a highly productive body of work over a span of fifty-five years.

He attempted and succeeded in carving out his own, entirely personal path in directing, away from established notions and entrenched aesthetic trends, far from methods and "schools," achieving an inexhaustible stylistic variety in his productions, stemming from the exploration of the essential elements of each text, a deep knowledge of the long-standing European theatrical tradition, the musicality intertwined with his directorial vision, the successful assimilation—and at times blending—of forms and genres, and his sincere belief in the art of the actor.
