Description

Protected Geographical Indication (PGI): Drama

The Michailidis Estate is located in Agios Athanasios, Drama, in a fertile area that attests to the cultivation of vines since ancient times. Kostas Semertzidis, grandfather of winemaker Iordanis Michailidis, started wine production in Kyrgia, Drama, in 1924.

The third generation, represented by Iordanis Michailidis, took over in 2004 with the aim of creating a state-of-the-art winery and producing quality wines that incorporate modern winemaking techniques with local traditions.

This wine comes from a four-acre vineyard in the area of Lagotopos and is cultivated with the Assyrtiko and Gewürztraminer varieties. The very low yield of 450 kg per acre, late harvest, and fermentation in small French oak barrels for 6 months, offer an exceptional white wine with an alcohol content of 15%. There are 1600 bottles available in production.

It is a very expensive wine, but the best Assyrtiko Blend from the wider region (and double the price though). I recommend it with white meats and pasta, even with heavy sauces. From the first aroma to the aftertaste, it perfectly balances the sharpness of Assyrtiko with the sweetness that gewurztraminers produce. I believe it is the perfect wine for seafood and soft cheeses. It is also the type of wine that everyone likes, from fans of natural wines to the old men who don't change their Country Book.
