The revisionist stance of Giannis Koliopoulos continuously fertilizes new grounds, defying any cost. He questioned the national role of the bandits, redefined the principles of modern Greek history, battled conspiracy theories in Greece's international relations, highlighted its European orientation, and led research on the Macedonian issue down new paths.
One only needs to read his two-volume history carefully to identify a multitude of new questions and challenges for bold research. Herein lies the primary reason for the attraction of students and scholarly admirers. Despite the late criticism he has faced, one cannot deny him the character of a quintessential revisionist historian with bold language and opinion, liberal and pro-European.
The second reason for his scholarly charm is his writing. I do not mean the linguistic instrument, which has become more learned over the years, or the elegance in handling English prose, praised in every book review—nor the inventiveness in titles and terms, which has also influenced us all. I mean the ability to highlight the human factor through his writing, to bring to life the characters—diplomats, bandits, captains, voevodas—within events and theoretical discussions, without ever losing the thread of the narrative.
