Port or Porto is one of the most well-known dessert wines that has brought Portugal fame and placed it on the global wine map. It is one of the oldest appellations in the world (1756) and owes its name not to the area where it is produced, but to the port from which it is traded.
The regions where the grapes entitled to the appellation Port or Porto are cultivated are inland, approximately 70 km from the port and towards the Spanish border. The entire cultivation area, which extends above the river, is terraced.
The addition of alcohol is the necessary step to stop alcoholic fermentation and preserve the unfermented sugars. In the case of Port, the alcohol added is the local distillate aguardiente. The sweet wine produced has an alcohol content that reaches 19%-20% vol and its quality is determined by the correct timing of the distillate addition.
Tawny Port ages in oak barrels using the solera technique and originates from red grapes. When there is an indication of age, it is a product of blending aged wines that sum up to 10, 20, 30, or even 40 years of aging in barrels. Once out of the barrel, Tawny Port is bottled and ready for consumption, without further improvement during its time in the bottle.
