This volume provides a concise yet comprehensive examination of the personality and educational work of the most distinguished educators who are key representatives of the prevailing movements in Reform Pedagogy.
By exploring their pedagogical work, the relevance between their philosophical - pedagogical ideas and the characteristics of their personality is investigated on one side, and the broad and diverse spirit of the international phenomenon of the time, the Reform Pedagogy Movement, on the other.
The common points in the unified examination of these Educators include a brief biography, where the main factors shaping each one's personality, their pedagogical activity, their core philosophical-pedagogical beliefs, their pedagogical theory, the most notable pedagogical ideas, or the pedagogical system they propose are presented.
Also mentioned are the prevailing trends in Reform Pedagogy, analyzing the inclusion of each educator within them as well as the spirit of their reformist aspirations. This is followed by a brief critical assessment of each one's overall educational work, both in relation to the broader context of Reform Pedagogy and in relation to contemporary pedagogical ideas.
Through this presentation, the reader has the opportunity to represent within themselves the evolution of pedagogical thought and action and to draw conclusions for the present and future of our Education.
George E. Pyrgiotakis, former Associate Professor, was born in Ierapetra, Crete. He graduated from the Pedagogical Academy of Heraklion and worked as a primary education teacher in Greek schools in Greece and Germany.
He studied Pedagogy at the renowned University of Heidelberg, where he obtained the academic degrees of Magister Artium and Doctorate. He taught pedagogical studies at the Ralleio Pedagogical Academy, served as a Permanent Member of the Pedagogical Institute, a position he resigned from due to his election as Assistant Professor in the Department of Education at the University of Thessaly.
There, he taught until his retirement in 1911. His research interests, as evidenced by his doctoral dissertation, books, and publications in Greek and German pedagogical journals, primarily focus on issues of General Pedagogy, History of Pedagogy, and History of Education.
