Kazantzakis sought through literature, with concise and unadorned language, to convey on a global scale the essence of his philosophical ideas. He was resolute, as his Odyssey is the greatest epic of the white race.
After studying law at the University of Athens, he apprenticed with the French philosopher of life Bergson in Paris, where he wrote a thesis on the philosophy of law and the state in Nietzsche. He placed at the center of his reflections the way of life of man, having as a model perhaps Socrates’ “pôs biotêon,” that is, how one must conduct one’s life.
The Cretan thinker had immersed himself not only in the streams and ideals of classical antiquity but also in both ideological currents and the foremost literary works of the world. He placed freedom and love for mankind at the top of the value scale, since his central theme was the union of man with God through continuous and relentless struggles.
His motto was: “Love man because you are him.” He tried to harmonize the tendencies of opposing forces, of thesis and antithesis, in synthesis and reconciliation, having first carefully listened to both sides on disputed issues. He did not wish to get rich but gave his possessions to the poor.
He set as the purpose of his life to avoid the “shiver” one feels before the abyss and the “trembling at the threshold” of joy. In his ideal state, he had as an ideal a free, peaceful, brotherly, and angelically crafted world.
The dreadful situation with successive exhausting wars against innocent citizens and children, the existence of still unfree and authoritarian regimes, governmental scandals, the ever-increasing heinous crimes, and greed make his work more timely today than ever.
The possession of nuclear weapons by only a few states automatically creates free people and slaves.
