Makarios and Grivas: Explosive, contradictory, strong, controversial personalities, they were heroized by their supporters and demonized by their opponents like few others.
This work is a comparative historical study in which, for the first time, the role of Makarios and Grivas is analyzed beyond blinders and prejudices. It investigates their parallel paths, the interaction of their actions, and the consequences they had for the Cyprus issue. It unravels a bloody history of division with political intrigues, nationally dangerous provocations, complex conspiracies, assassinations, etc., often targeting metropolitan Greece, which ends in a national tragedy.
Among other things, it reveals: How they prepared the EOKA struggle, why they accepted the Zurich-London agreements, how Makarios was elected President, why Cyprus was led to the 1963 division, and how Grivas returned to Cyprus in 1964. What forced G. Papandreou to write to them "you agree on one thing and do another," how the Union was undermined during 1964-1967, Grivas's involvement in the ASPIDA affair, and the role of Makarios and Grivas in the Kofinou events.
What was Grivas's relationship with Papadopoulos and Makarios's with the Panagoulis assassination attempt, what was the National Front, what was behind the attempt on Makarios, and who assassinated Pol. Yiorkatzi. Why the Athens-Nicosia crisis of 1971 occurred, the truth about the Lisbon talks, and how Athens prevented the partitionist ambitions of the British and Turks.
The work is based on exhaustive research of all sources. Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the USA, Britain, the USSR, etc., confidential documents, CIA reports and minutes. Testimonies from interviews, official statements, unpublished diaries, and recorded memories. All relevant bibliography of protagonists and historical researchers.
We believe that this work contributes decisively to the restoration of the history of the Cyprus issue.
