Description

The fighters of 1940 performed their duty, but then came the post-war years and the responsibilities for the great national issues regarding the 7976 heroes who fell on the battlefields in Northern Epirus and remain without graves and without a monument.

Those graves and monuments are no longer needed by those fighters who, even unburied, passed into Eternity. The graves and monuments are needed by the children of the fallen, their relatives, all of us because they are our own people. We need them to fulfill all that was not done. To burn the incense, to light the candle, to lay a wreath to do the very least that is our duty as a nation.

The heroes do not demand, but they wait. They do not complain about having remained unburied for 80 years in Northern Epirus. They wait for us, the successors, to fulfill our duty. To do the basics that our ancient customs impose, the particular respect for the dead. To remember "to bury the dead, not to insult the dead." The heroes wait for us to respond to our religious, customary, and national obligations, to perform our sacred duty, as our historical heritage dictates.

Formal ceremonial speeches, praises, parades, and the laying of wreaths every October 28th are not enough. There is an urgent need to meet their expectations for a free and proud Greece.

The heroes wrote their own story for the homeland, on the plains, in the mountains, on the steep rocks of Northern Epirus. They watered the land with blood and tears. For the fallen in the nation's struggles, General Makrygiannis mentions: […] My homeland, remember those who, for your honor and freedom, did not consider death and suffering. And if you forget them, the stones and the soil, where they shed blood and tears, will remember them […]. G. SOURLAS [from the book's back cover]
