I wonder why no one mentioned the automatic lead advance mechanism as you write.
This is the 3rd one I buy (2 broke at the same spot - down where it screws - I don't know how).

Even though I did not buy it for design (which is probably the original design of it) it is used for notes on remote reading pages (70-100 pages) because it writes thickly without double writing. The tips are also difficult to break at this thickness (it has not happened yet).
