The current scientific understanding considers that words are the means by which the linguistic community not only names but also perceives and classifies phenomena and entities of the external world, thereby bringing order and structure to the formless chaos that characterizes it.
This ability to classify phenomena and express complex relationships demonstrates that a word is not a static element but a functional one that takes on, depending on the context, different meanings and is integrated into various fields and subsystems, creating various kinds and degrees of relationships within the linguistic system.
However, vocabulary, despite the importance attributed to it by applied linguistics, is not sufficiently utilized or effectively taught in today's schools, a fact rooted in past linguistic perceptions and teaching practices.
In their current work, the authors systematically present a comprehensive history of vocabulary teaching in Greek education, so that the perceptions that have gradually formed, the prevailing mindset, the gaps, the omissions, and the progress made in this area to date, as well as the methodology applied over time, can be clearly seen.
They propose a modern teaching intervention which, taking into account the school reality as well as contemporary scientific findings regarding vocabulary, can contribute to a more effective and sufficient mastery of the language by students.
