Napoleon S. Mitsis

Napoleon Sp. Mitsis studied Philology at the School of Philosophy of the University of Ioannina and served for many years as a philologist in public secondary education. He then pursued postgraduate studies as a scholarship recipient of the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) at the University of Athens, and shortly thereafter, he was awarded a doctorate in linguistics from the same university. In 1991, he was elected as a Member of the Pedagogical Institute, and in this capacity, he participated as an author or coordinator of writing teams in the preparation of many educational textbooks. He taught theoretical and applied linguistics as an adjunct professor (1991-94) at the Department of Primary Education of the University of Thessaly. He also taught applied linguistics, specifically the teaching of Greek as a native and foreign language, at the School of Philosophy of the University of Athens as a Scientific Associate (1993-96). In 1995, he was unanimously elected Associate Professor of Linguistics at the Department of Primary Education of the University of Thessaly, and in December 1999, he became a full professor in the same department, where he continues to serve to this day. He has published numerous works related to the teaching of Modern Greek, both as a native and a foreign language. He was a member of the design team for the "Logomathia" program, developed within the framework of the Institute for Language and Speech Processing. He served as a collaborator for Educational Television (1979-81), secretary of the "Committee for the Greek Language" formed and operated at the Ministry of Education during 1987-88, a member of the research team of the Onassis Foundation for more effective teaching of Ancient Greek, and Director of the Regional Training Center (PEK) in Larissa from 1998 to the present. Since 1993, he has been collaborating as a scientific advisor with the Landes-Institut of Soest (Pedagogical Institute of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) for the preparation of a series of textbooks intended for teaching Modern Greek as a second language in Germany. He has taught in many programs (teacher equivalency, retraining of unemployed teachers abroad, etc.) on language courses and has occasionally participated in various seminars and conferences as a speaker on topics of his expertise, both in Greece and abroad.
