This collective volume aims to highlight, through the interdisciplinary contribution of the authors, the ideological aspects related to the use of language as a communicative practice. This scientific reflection was developed within the framework of the seminar Ideologies, Language Communication, and Education co-organized by the Departments of Preschool Education and Primary Education at the University of Thessaly (Volos, November 6, 2019) and is based on the assumption that social structures, attitudes and perceptions, and linguistic practices form a network that is ideologically intertwined, expressed through linguistic choices, and maintained (also) through education.
The ideological functions of language are examined across the spectrum of linguistic communication, with particular emphasis on the field of education, as the latter occupies a prominent position in shaping linguistic ideologies and, consequently, identities, both of educators and future citizens. Common themes of the chapters include the reflection on how language maintains but also constructs specific versions of social reality (linguistic construction of ideology) and the ideological positions that are discernible in public discourse about language (ideological construction of language).
