Love and the contradictory emotions it provokes - euphoria, jealousy, agony, rage, loss, frustration, pleasure, ecstasy - are one of the central themes of poetry.
From Sappho and Catullus, the troubadours and Spencer to Byron and Goethe, Cavafy and Plath, poets have always felt the need to speak about this passion that, as Shakespeare says in 'Othello', 'shakes our very frame'.
It may seem easy for someone to ask their beloved, 'How do I love thee?', as Elizabeth Barrett Browning asks her future husband in her famous poem, and then proceed to, like her, 'count the ways', but it is not.
Because counting in poetry is done with words, meticulously arranged on paper to create a poem; and words, as we well know, are the most precarious means to speak about something as powerful as love.
