Description

The work of M. G. Papazoglou fills a significant gap in the Greek literature of Political Science concerning political leadership. It develops a theoretical background with international references that emphasize power, the political context, and supporters.

It examines the functions of leadership in the Greek political system from the early days of state formation and explores the challenges and actions of party and government leaderships up to the present. Papazoglou does not seek unequivocal answers but interprets the successes and failures of leaderships through a network of factors and conditions.

He concludes that in Greek politics, the model of 'transactional leadership of limited reform and effectiveness' predominates, and in rare cases, versions of transformational leadership arise. Additionally, he develops a set of innovative proposals for the renovation of the political system, while simultaneously outlining the priorities for sustainable governance.

The great challenge from the perspective of leadership in modern Greece is a deeper understanding of the political context, the ability to strategically direct party and government operations, the assessment of the radical tendency, and the mutuality in the leadership-supporters relationship through the distribution of roles and responsibilities on both sides.

Manos G. Papazoglou is a Lecturer in Political Systems at the University of the Peloponnese.
