Description & Specifications

Since 2010, the year the economic crisis began, Greek-German relations have sharply deteriorated as they became trapped in media stereotypes. Berlin was portrayed as "fixated" on imposing austerity measures, while at the same time, the "unproductive" and "lazy" Greeks were refusing to change their mindset and take responsibility for rebuilding their country.

The way in which the "national" characteristics of the "bankrupt" Greeks and the "timelessly arrogant" Germans were depicted during the recent traumatic period brought back the past of Greek-German relations to the forefront, especially the perspectives under which Greek society has perceived and has since managed the long shadow of the German Occupation.

However, other positive aspects were overlooked, such as Germany's active support and the provision of asylum to many Greeks during the Dictatorship (1967-1974). As emerges from the studies in the present collective volume, Greek-German relations are part of complex historical processes and are neither characterized by one-sidedness nor by uniformity.

Against the backdrop of the current context of the reset of bilateral relations, the collective volume aims to provide the general public with a set of research papers based on the utilization of primary archival material and new historiographical approaches. These scientific studies can serve as a catalyst for upgrading the public dialogue around an extremely pressing and crucial issue, such as the long-term relations between Greece and Germany.
