As far as I know, this doctoral thesis is the first to be conducted on the subject of Essays, a collection of critiques and essay-like texts, by the internationally renowned Greek poet George Seferis (Nobel Prize in Literature 1963). At the same time, it is a contribution to the study of the essay as a literary genre.

For three main reasons, Seferis' Essays deserve to be the subject of study. First and foremost, because we will achieve a perspective on the work of a major poet from the unusual angle of critical texts. Secondly, because, precisely as such texts written by a major poet, they constitute valuable testimony of his perceptions regarding issues related to Greek and other European literatures during the period 1936-1971, when these texts were written. Thirdly, because the need to theoretically delineate the generic identity of these texts presents a perception we have of the essay as a literary genre.
