What is memory and what is a monument? How does the past become history? Why is classical antiquity considered more significant than the Middle Ages? How do we choose what to excavate and what to display in a museum? What is the role of citizens in the management of cultural heritage?

These are some of the questions addressed in this collective volume. Experts from various scientific fields attempt to approach the multidimensional relationship of Greek society with historical past, exploring topics such as the mechanisms of shaping collective memory, the preferential treatment of certain historical periods, the interaction of citizens with the material remnants of the past, and more.

The volume aims to connect the general public with contemporary theoretical developments in the field of the humanities, to highlight the ideological parameters of the study of the past, and to challenge certain distortions that characterize the public discourse on archaeology.
