Bosch MUM54A00 Kitchen Machine - Review

Three years ago I was looking to buy a simple kitchen machine for my basic everyday kitchen needs. Countless options, and I ended up with the Bosch MUM54 which seemed, along with its good price, to cover them.

The Bosch MUM series has been around for many years and is among the most popular and beloved kitchen machines on the market.

First Encounter

At first glance, the device immediately catches the eye with its distinctive and unique shape, featuring an arm that extends vertically from its body, deviating from the classic G shape of its category.

The Bosch MUM family includes dozens of models with different power and accessories, but I chose a mid-range one with 900W and the three basic attachments: the dough hook, the beater, and the whisk.

In addition to the 3.9-liter stainless steel bowl, there is the bowl's protective lid with an opening and a storage pouch for the attachments.

One of the strong features of the Bosch MUM is the planetary 3D motion, which rotates them at a slight angle for better mixing at the bottom and the sides of the bowl. There are a total of 7 operating speeds plus the pulse function.

Of course, on the kitchen machine, there are special slots to connect the dozens of attachments that you can purchase separately to meet some of your needs, such as a blender, food processor, pasta attachment, etc.

At the base, there are suction cups for better stability during use, and a surprise feature I didn't expect to see: a special storage space for the cord inside the body of the kitchen machine!

Tests

The mixing attachments, although they do not have anything that makes them stand out, are well made and offer what you would expect from a stand mixer in this price range. They attach and detach easily from the arm and are dishwasher safe.

The bowl is made of stainless steel and has a capacity of 3.9 liters, with the maximum and minimum capacities being fully adequate for preparing recipes. The bowl locks into the base without any possibility of moving.

In terms of noise during use, the Bosch MUM54, even at the highest speed, remains stable and makes the expected noise.

The 7 speed settings handle all kinds of mixing without any particular problems, while changes are smooth and without (relatively) splashing.

The Bosch MUM54 has 900W of power and, to push it to its limits, I proceeded to prepare various recipes using all 3 attachments. I also tried to strain the motor a little, using the maximum ingredient quantities allowed by the bowl, as well as the maximum operating time.

Attachments

Beater: The ingredients in sweet recipes (cakes, cookies, etc.) are mixed properly, although there should be some minimum quantities, as with all stand mixers. The effectiveness of the 3D planetary motion is evident in the final result.

Dough hook: The ingredients for making bread dough as well as tsoureki are mixed fully and correctly, while at the end of mixing the bowl is usually clean, with the dough on the hook.

Whisk: I mainly use the whisk to make meringue for various desserts as well as whipped cream. The result is always a firm and fluffy mixture, and the 3D planetary motion certainly helps with that.

Final Verdict

As I mentioned, I have had the Bosch MUM54 for 3 years now, and to put it simply, it has been worth every penny. It is frequently used in a household with two small children for doughs, breads, cookies, cakes, and biscuits. I have no complaints and it has fully met every task assigned to it.

It is a branded kitchen machine from a reliable manufacturer and has everything you need for your simple daily needs. At around €150, it is a very good choice.

What would I like? A bit more stability in the arm, as at high speeds (mainly with the dough hook) it shakes quite a bit due to its unique design. Also, I would like a slightly more premium feel to the attachments, although in this price range, more expensive attachments would impact some other features of the Bosch MUM54.
