Hair Serum: Everything You Need to Know!
A good hair routine usually includes a good shampoo, a conditioner, applying a mask 1-2 times a week, and a hair treatment. But is that enough? The answer is no! Hair serum is an essential product that you should add to your routine.
What is hair serum, then?
Hair serum is a styling and care product based on silicone or water, enriched with active ingredients.
Unlike hair oils (which penetrate deep into the hair fiber to nourish it), serum works like a “protective shield” on the surface. It locks in moisture, smooths the hair cuticle, and creates a transparent film that reflects light.
Discover the benefits!
- Frizz and dryness control: They add weight and tame damaged, frizzy or weak hair, creating a more glossy finish.
- Softness & shine: They revitalize dry and dull hair, adding the necessary moisture so that it looks healthier, more hydrated and radiant.
- Reduction of knots & tangles: Serums smooth the hair, thus reducing tangling. As the serum makes the hair smoother and silkier, it becomes easier to comb and more manageable.
- Enhancing the natural look: They improve the natural structure and texture of the hair, resulting in smoother and more defined hair, thus enhancing its natural appearance.
- Protects from damage: They protect the hair from pollutants, dust, photoaging and heat damage from styling. This is why serums are often applied to the hair before styling.
Choose based on your needs
How is it applied correctly?
The serum is highly concentrated, so proper application determines the result:
- Less is more: For hair lengths, 1-2 drops are more than enough for normal hair. If you use more, the hair will look greasy.
- The palm technique: Warm the serum by rubbing your palms together for 5 seconds before applying it. This activates the ingredients and helps it spread evenly.
- Never on the roots (if it is a length serum): Shine/anti-frizz serums always start from the ends and work upward, stopping at ear level.
- Right timing for the roots: Serums for growth/hair loss are ideally applied at night before bed on clean skin, so they can work during the night without affecting styling.
What to Watch Out For
⚠️ Watch Out for Silicones: Silicones (e.g., cyclomethicone, dimethicone) are not "bad" – they protect against heat and give a beautiful shine. However, if you have very fine hair, frequent use without a clarifying shampoo (deep cleansing) will weigh your hair down. If you have fine hair, choose silicone-free formulas.
✨ Serum vs Hair Oil: Oil usually nourishes the hair from within (it penetrates). Serum sits on the surface, creating a protective film against the environment, heat, and humidity. If you want protection from the blow dryer, choose Serum.
