Hyaluronic Acid: 5 reasons to add it to your routine today
Perhaps the most popular of all skincare ingredients, hyaluronic acid is now found in countless skincare products, promising "miracles" for the skin.
So what exactly is hyaluronic acid, which skin types is it ideal for, what are its beneficial properties, and how can you incorporate it into your routine to see the best possible results?
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a complex carbohydrate that is naturally produced by our body. However, as the years go by, its concentration in the skin cells decreases, causing the skin to lose volume and elasticity and appear dehydrated. That is when a cosmetic product with hyaluronic acid can be truly “life-saving” for its appearance.
Which skin types is hyaluronic acid ideal for?
A product with hyaluronic acid can benefit every skin type, from the youngest (i.e. 20 years old) to the most mature (i.e. 50+ years old).
Why include hyaluronic acid in your routine?
Hyaluronic acid primarily regulates hydration, improves intercellular communication, and contributes to the production of new collagen fibers. Also, if its molecular weight allows it, it can fill in fine lines and wrinkles from within, making the skin look smoother, “plumper,” and more youthful. The bad news is that its anti-aging effects are temporary, aka once you stop using the x product with hyaluronic acid, fine lines and wrinkles will become visible again.
How can you incorporate hyaluronic acid into your routine?
Although hyaluronic is an “acid,” it does not exfoliate, like glycolic acid for example, and so it can be used daily and combined without any fear of side effects with all other active ingredients (e.g. Retinol, AHA, BHA, vitamin C).
You can incorporate it into your routine through a facial cleanser, but I would suggest choosing a serum or a face cream with hyaluronic acid so that you can see more impressive results. Apply it either in the morning or at night, always on clean, damp skin, and wait for it to be fully absorbed before moving on to the next product. In any case, as I mentioned above, you can then use whichever active ingredient you want.
Extra Tip: For an extra boost of hydration during the day, keep a face mist with hyaluronic acid in your bag, which you can spray on your face when you are at the office, school, or out with your friends to refresh your skin and make it look more plump and radiant.
Hyaluronic acid also has a place in hair care routines. It is suitable for every type, from the driest and most damaged, to colored and fine hair, as it does not leave any traces of greasiness.
On the contrary, it manages to retain the necessary moisture inside the hair, keeping it healthy, shiny, and strong. You can incorporate it into your routine through a shampoo, conditioner, mask, or even a leave-in hair cream.
