How necessary is the reexamination of some fundamental philosophical assumptions surrounding human nature, thought, and practice, in order to ensure some certainty, or even truth, for an educational program of self-actualization?
How can we maintain as many of those qualities that support such a program, qualities like dialogicality, educational play, mutual recognition, participation in the reconstruction of society and culture?
How important is the need to redefine the role, content, and mission of moral and political education and to shape realistic expectations for a reliable theory that will (aim to) meet the demands of contemporary culture, balancing between and beyond relativism and absolutism, cultural fatalism and the global convergence of different ways of life?
Such questions are raised in Hegel's philosophical theory of education. The essays in this volume respond to these questions, sometimes highlighting the conceptual horizon within which they become possible and reasonable, and at other times challenging the Hegelian premises and answers.
