In Sappho's poem, love is perceived as a humanoid presence with immense power. It is both a god and a demon at the same time. And Sappho, within two of her verses, illuminates all its contradictions. Love distributes suffering. And people patiently endure loneliness, separation, unfulfilled desires, and nostalgia. The memory of happy moments, deceptive hopes torment and embitter the soul, darken the mind, shake the will to live, casting shadows over its joys. This dark side of love constitutes half of its nature. On the other hand, love creates fairy tales. It makes judgment selective. Lovers idealize their partners. Thus, every love seems unique and at the same time different from the previous one. Their love feeds on illusions and delusions. However, without this mythologizing, no one could fall in love again. It is a feeling of relief, a temporary catharsis, which people need to endure the fluctuations of their emotional life.
