This book is primarily aimed at the average "history-loving" reader who wishes to be informed, within the framework of a monograph, about the presence of one of the most interesting state entities of medieval Hellenism, while also providing an extensive bibliography of sources and aids for those who wish to study the subject in depth.
The purpose of the book is to provide, after several decades, an outline of the history of the Megalokomnenos in the context of a concise monograph, gathering and organizing as much as possible the various new theories, opinions, and views around various significant issues of late medieval Pontic history.
In the context of this narrative, the usual (in previous literature) presentation of an introductory chapter-summary about the pre-1204 history of Trebizond and the generally Byzantine Pontus has been avoided, since on the one hand this period has been extensively researched in recent years and on the other hand, the pre-1204 period is not thematically connected so closely with the history of the Megalokomnenos.
