Description & Specifications

George Maris was much more than the "patriarch of Greek detective literature": a combative journalist during the years of anti-communism and censorship, an important figure in the publishing and journalistic scene of the country for 25 years, and at the same time an exemplary "narrator" as well as a gifted writer, who could create convincing characters, with the central figure being the anti-hero protagonist of his detective stories, Inspector Giorgis Be emphas.

Maris knew how to stage a atmospheric fictional world in the heart or suburbs of the capital, in the cosmopolitan Greek islands of the '50s and '60s, in Thessaly of the wealthy landowners and bandits, or even in Athens during the first Olympic Games.

This volume collects original texts – written especially for the 100th anniversary of his birth – from writers, literary figures, and journalists that highlight important aspects of his journalistic and literary work, which have been deliberately ignored by critics for decades: from the period of the Battle in the daily and periodical press of the time, the influence of French culture on the author's personality, and his evocative Athenian topography to the literary and writing conditions that structurally shape his work, the later publications, as well as the "gallery" of his characters.

Additionally, unpublished documents (photographs, manuscripts, typescripts) from the author's archive and the family archive of his son, Angelos Tsirimokos, who justifiably prefaces this overdue homage to George Maris, are presented.
