This monograph is a representation of aspects of Athens during the period 1880-1896 in the literary and journalistic work of Michail Mitsakis. It is a proposal for the study of urban folklore, with literary texts as "reference points," the "textual" (otherwise) "representations" of the city. The writer, journalist, flaneur, "chronographer of the city," Michail Mitsakis, creates urban ethnography, urban anthropology-folklore, with a peculiar "field observation." In the represented Athens, numerous "modern" forms appear in fields such as identities, collectivity, entertainment, recreation, music, sociality, values, forms of control, social relations, forms of social exclusion, otherness, cultural customs, etc. The astute observer Michail Mitsakis shines in the conceptualization of the city's "liminal" condition. His narrative and journalistic records essentially represent his selective responses against the imposed (pseudo)modernizations that displace the values, customs, and other "fundamental principles" of a Greek way of life that is "patriarchal" in its organization.
