Description

Description

In recent years, Western societies have been experiencing a renewed surge in migration and refugee phenomena, which has led to a simultaneous rise in xenophobic tendencies.

Western rationality, structured on the principles and values of Enlightenment, democracy, and individual rights, is being tested and questioned again under conditions of political, social, and military confrontation, as well as economic destabilization.

The multicultural wealth is now largely seen as a threat to the cohesion, security, and prosperity of Western societies. Soon, the role of the educational institution in overcoming stereotypical perceptions and prejudices will again be brought to the forefront, despite the obvious unequal distribution of responsibilities for the current situation.

Perhaps now the need for ongoing support of intercultural education at local, national, and supranational levels through policies that will enhance equality of life opportunities and promote the social and economic integration of the often threatening “others” is more understandable.

Read an excerpt

The "others," despite the dominant discourse articulated, do not constitute a homogeneous group to which, we add, a single policy can be applied, but they differ according to the linguistic and cultural capital they possess, their ethnic origin, the length of their stay in Greece, and many other factors (Markou 2010, p. 30). Regarding this issue, two observations can be made that may seem partly contradictory, but we believe they should always be taken into account. On the one hand, one of the mistakes of the policies and practices developed around multiculturalism is precisely the omnipotence attributed to culture, which is assumed to determine the perceptions and practices of its members, crushing social subjects by not recognizing their ability to act differently from what is expected (see also Phillips 2007, pp. 8-9).
