Description & Specifications

"POETRY IS ME," said Idea Villarino. Since the publication of her very first poetry collection in 1945, Villarino has been recognized as one of the most important voices in Spanish poetry and was a living legend in her homeland, Uruguay.

Her loneliness, her loves, her political activism, her ethics wove a fabric inseparable from her verses. Love and Death constitute the fundamental obsessions of her poetry.

"I experience everything intensely, love, pain, happiness, love for the world, but also exasperation, contempt, the desire for death. I write while being at the height of these emotions, which is why everything I express is either fiercely strong or moving."

In her poetry, Villarino surrenders completely and unconditionally, "she gives everything, without holding anything back for herself," said the great Argentine poet Juan Gelman. "Her poetry allows us entry, but not exit. More than communication, it constitutes communion."
