Description & Specifications

What drives a state to choose to assimilate an ethnic group, exclude it, or officially recognize it as a minority? In this groundbreaking study, Haris Mylonas examines the effects of geopolitical alignments on the design of state policies of ethnicization towards non-dominant ethnic groups, namely any group of individuals that the governing elites consider a non-assimilated group.

Through a comprehensive study of the Balkans, Mylonas shows that the way a state addresses a non-dominant ethnic group within its borders is largely determined by its foreign policy, whether it is revisionist or committed to the international status quo, as well as by whether it is an ally or competitor of the external manipulators of that group.

Mylonas explores the implications of external interventions both in highlighting ethnic differences and in the design of state policies of ethnicization. This book introduces international politics into the study of the ethnicization process, building a bridge between International Relations and Comparative Politics.

It is the first book to analyze how international interventions in the ethnic conflicts of third states determine which groups are assimilated, which are granted minority rights, and which are excluded by the states in which they reside.

The English edition of the book was awarded the European Studies Book Award by the Council for European Studies in 2014, as well as the Peter Katzenstein Book Prize in 2013 from the Council University.

Haris Mylonas has been teaching Comparative Politics since 2009 at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Political Science from the University of Athens. He then obtained an M.A. in Political Science from the University of Chicago in 2003 and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Yale University in 2008. That same year, he was selected as an Academy Scholar of the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies at Harvard University.
