Description

Description

The military manual of the late 6th century, widely known as "The Strategikon of Maurice", is one of the most famous works of medieval Greek literature and is considered a classic in the genre of military literature. It is literally the ultimate Byzantine "best seller", as it had the greatest impact after the Bible during its time, and is still internationally acclaimed today. It is preserved in 22 manuscripts, complete or in fragments, and has been "published" hundreds of times before modern research utilized it in the direction of Byzantine Studies and the specific interests of Military History: it reflects the era in which the European medieval world was preparing to succeed the ancient world, thoroughly presenting the highly evolved cavalry of that time in terms of recruitment, training, and military operations, attempting to shape military mentality, and book number 11 constitutes the only source of early history for certain European peoples. For Greek readers, it also serves as evidence of living Greek language. This is the first attempt to present the text to a wider audience in Greece under the original title: "Strategika of Maurice, composed during the reign of Emperor Maurice".
