Description

For the History of Cyprus, the period 1959-1974 gathers intense research interest. It is the first phase of the independent Cypriot Republic, and it is itself a node of changes. The dense developments in all areas brought about upheavals and differentiations. At the same time, this period carried on its shoulders a substrate of ideological references; what had already been shaped by the political and social evolution of the two communities in the previous decades, under British colonial rule. The multifaceted exploration of the first phase of independence, when taking into account the factor of "continuities and discontinuities", highlights the strong survivals from the previous period. These survivals were so resilient that a significant part of the perceptions that were fertilized could be inherited even in the post-1974 era - despite the strong shock of the coup and invasion.
The dominant ideological orientations, the political designs, and the socio-economic developments of the period 1959-74 imposed the complete subordination of educational policy to the rules of national mobilization, in both communities of Cyprus. Education was considered the quintessential means of consolidating national consciousness, but also achieving the long-term national-political goals of each of the two major communities on the island. The individual manifestations of this fact, the nuances and contradictions, the social and economic dimensions are not just useful research tools, but also valuable tools for reading the modern history of Cyprus, up to the present day.
