The dramatic reduction of human, technological, and financial resources in the healthcare sector calls into question, among other things, the significance and implications of biomedical and pharmaceutical innovation in the medical care industry.
The increase in healthcare spending, both nationally and internationally, is not solely due to the rise in volume and prices, but also concurrently to the phenomena of rapid innovative turnover of pharmaceutical and biomedical products.
Innovation in pharmaceutical care constitutes a complex and multidimensional phenomenon, which, as indicated by relevant scientific documentation, positively contributes to health and the quality of health-related life, but also aids in the development of the research industry and in economic growth through the increase of GDP and employment.
The impact of these parameters must be considered through systematic multicriteria evaluation and inevitably imposes reforms in the pharmaceutical market, as well as in decision-making processes through regulatory interventions.
In this light, it is necessary to reconcile, on one hand, the control of costs due to finite budgets and on the other hand, the increase in expenditure due to the tidal wave of innovation, through appropriate structural changes in healthcare services, to the extent that the assertion holds that "the future of medical care is technological and innovative".
This book attempts to approach the subject from the perspective of international experience and practice with the evident purpose of establishing a well-founded pharmaceutical policy within the framework of national health policy, given that it is of utmost priority to undertake the relevant political and scientific responsibility for the design, management, and control of biomedical and pharmaceutical technology, which constitutes the future of medical care.
