Through the topics: "image and prayer," "the term ecclesiastical painting," "the significance and content of the image," "the theology and aesthetics of the image," "the Cretan school - a historical-theological approach," "the way the face of a saint is revealed to us," and "the theology of the Bridegroom's image," the author, as a scholar (theologian-theorist of Byzantine art) and conservator of icons, presents here his personal relationship with icons and their art, summarizing his iconological thought in these seven essays.
Over many years, he has tried to emphasize the ecclesiastical and Eucharistic character of the Orthodox icon. The icon, as he has learned and ministered for about thirty years to this day, represents for him primarily a point of "personal encounter" within the space of Orthodox faith and secondarily an object of study and ministry. A common thread that runs through and unites all the texts of this publication is the search for the meaning of our sacred art, as well as its position in the life not only of the believer but also of the contemporary art-loving Greek.
