December of 46 BC: Caesar disembarks in Spain to confront the last forces of his opponents, who have gathered around the two sons of Pompey the Great, Gnaeus and Sextus, and threaten to ignite the Iberian Peninsula.
September of 45 BC: Caesar returns triumphant from Spain to Rome, only to meet his death a year later at the hands of conspirators within the Roman Senate. Among these events, one of the bloodiest campaigns of the famous Roman general takes place, against the fierce and stubborn resistance of his political enemies, in the context of the civil war for dominance in Rome.
The most significant moment and turning point of these developments is the famous Battle of Munda, the outcome of which determined the historical continuation of the Roman Empire, as well as world history. This victory of Caesar over the last supporters of Pompey and his faction marked the definitive end of the Res Publica and defined the beginning of a journey that led to the development of the Roman Imperium.
These events are included in the work De Bello Hispaniensi, the translation of which is presented in this book, in an effort to make the adventures of Julius Caesar more accessible and well-known to the public, following his triumphant victory at Pharsalus.
The Historical Quest editions continue with this work the three-volume series "The Wars of Caesar," which aims to introduce the Greek audience to the historical texts that depict Caesar's path to the conquest of supreme power. This series includes the Alexandrian War / De bello Alexandrino, the War in Spain / De bello Hispaniensi, and the African War / De bello Africo. It is worth noting that these works are translated for the first time into modern Greek.
This volume constitutes the second part of this three-volume translation project by philologist Christos Anagnostou, which aims to make Caesar's military adventures more widely known, adventures that ultimately led him to seize supreme power in Rome and meet an untimely death under the blows of conspirators on the Ides of March in 44 BC.
