Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) –in his main work The World as Will and Representation, from which the texts of this edition are drawn– rejects the entire previous philosophical tradition that viewed the world as a “world”, that is, as order and beauty, as the product of rational creative design.
According to his diagnosis, the deeper essence of reality is a completely irrational, faceless, endless and purposeless, “blind” will. In such a reality, human happiness is impossible, and its pursuit is a product of delusion and futility.
Within the framework of human existence, the will affirms itself through the act of procreation. Thus, the tragic cycle of birth is renewed each time, with the continuous oscillation of man between pain and ennui, ultimately culminating in death.
