This book is the first complete translated and annotated edition in Greek of Cicero's "De re publica" (On the Republic). It arose from the need to fill an important gap in domestic book production; a gap concerning the political writings of one of the greatest Latin authors.
Every effort has been made to produce a modern scientific edition that will meet both the educational needs of academic institutions and those of the contemporary reader for a text whose political content is more relevant than ever.
This edition provides a text as reliable and complete as possible, based on the most authoritative critical editions, with modifications where deemed necessary, and a translation that strives to remain faithful to the Latin original in its terminology, style, and structure.
The Introduction examines all those aspects of the work and its author that would be necessary for the historical-political and spiritual-cultural understanding of the work: the conditions of writing and the dating of the work, elements related to its style, structure, content, language, and characters, its models and sources, its relationships with Greek political philosophical thought and literature, especially Plato, its significance and reception, the direct and indirect transmission of the text, as well as its study so far by Greek scholars.
The commentary addresses issues of text criticism, matters of style and narrative technique, the authenticity of the excerpts, linguistic and factual elements, aiming to be as comprehensive as possible to meet the above-described needs.
