Anyone who has been a middle school student will recognize similarities to the time when they themselves were a middle school student, even if decades have passed since then. Anyone who is or has been a middle school teacher or even an educator at other levels of school education (Elementary, High School) will recognize many more similarities with their own experiences.
Having the advantage of a decade's temporal distance from the period when the events described occurred, the freedom of expression provided by retirement, as well as the insights gained from past experiences, the book offers a very interesting perspective useful for the student, the parent, and even more for the educator.
This is not about generalized pedagogical theories but a heartfelt testimony, in which the school's principal courageously and reflectively re-examines the specific punishments given over a decade at his school and – most importantly – the reasons that caused them.
His conclusion is the insignificance of the events that often lead to punishments, which, however, in the daily intensity of school life, are often exaggerated and frequently create problems in the functioning of the classroom. This is human, of course, and not always controllable amid the pressures of everyday life, the complexity, and the multifactorial nature of the classroom, within which the educator strives to maintain balance daily.
