An inguinal hernia is the swelling (mass) that appears in the groin area. It can potentially occur on both the right and left sides simultaneously (bilateral inguinal hernia).

The content of the inguinal hernia is usually a portion of the intestine and peritoneal (intra-abdominal) fat. In some cases, it may even contain a portion of the urinary bladder. The inguinal hernia is the most common among the other hernias of the abdominal wall, accounting for about 80% and occurring in 27% of the total male population and 3% of the female population.
