Corfu - The Other Side
Corfu, a gem situated opposite the boot of Italy, serves as a strategic entrance to the Adriatic. This enchanting place has been coveted and invaded for thousands of years, ruled by various powers including the Romans, Byzantines, Angevins, and Venetians for 411 years, followed briefly by the French and finally the British for fifty years until its final union with Greece in 1864. Today, this island remains a pearl of the Mediterranean.
The island is carpeted with endless olive groves and dotted with cypresses beneath the bluest of skies. Its indented coastline features towering cliffs on one side and olive groves running to the water's edge on the other, concealing an interior filled with charm, the beauty of which never seems to fade.
Corfu Town, characterized by its attractive Venetian-influenced architecture and famous forts, stands as one of the most picturesque towns in the Mediterranean and has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Against this backdrop, the Corfiot heart continues to beat, showcasing its rich traditions, rituals, and activities, which prompt deeper reflections on various aspects of life. This side of Corfu was discovered and intrigued the author some sixteen years ago, far from the typical tourist crowds. It was noted that the eroding effects of external influences were already impacting many facets of local life, leading to a determination to capture what could be witnessed.
What better medium to encapsulate the spirit of this world than through the art of black and white photography? Over the years, the people of Corfu have graciously allowed insights into their lives.
