The Gemma crocus bulb blooms in spring and is planted in autumn. It grows in sunny or partially shaded locations in well-drained soil and is sold loose, per bulb.
Plant 5 cm deep, spacing the bulbs 5–8 cm apart, with the pointed end facing upwards. No fertiliser is needed at planting, though a little organic compost can help. The bulbs can be divided after flowering, once the foliage has yellowed and dried, to thin them out and propagate them. Allow the foliage to dry naturally before removing it so the bulb can store nutrients for the following year.
