The legend of Theophilus is a widely circulated medieval miracle story. A good man succumbs to Pride, sells his soul to the Devil, experiences a terrible crisis of conscience, and is saved by the Virgin Mary. The story has been translated into most European languages and appears in stained glass, sculptures, and manuscripts.
Gautier de Coinci wrote the most extensive version of the legend; his colorful details reveal the deep medieval fear of Hell and the Devil, as well as the great hopes placed in the Virgin Mary and the Church. Gautier de Coinci (1177–1236) was a French abbot and musician, best known for his devotion to the Virgin Mary. This is the first English translation of Gautier de Coinci’s pre-Faustian version of the story of Theophilus. It is presented in a bilingual format alongside the original Old French and includes a full introduction and notes.
