Emotion is inextricably intertwined with the ontological dimension of human existence, the contact with the social self, our social involvement and interaction in the social world. As a form of "ethereal" energy, poetically speaking, emotion is driven by its evident or inscrutable causes, permeates within us, and radiates to everything around us. But is emotion only an individual matter? Or is its expression or causality placed at the intersection of the individual and the social, within their timeless dialectical relationship?
If philosophy, psychology, cognitive sciences, and neurosciences have dedicated or continue to dedicate research and studies to this, sociology has only relatively recently begun to question the place of emotion in social realities, interactions, and exchanges in the social world. Or perhaps not so recently after all?
Approaching the theoretical work of sociologists and analyzing it, we find that emotion as a problematic and as a concept—even if not explicitly named—is present in both classical and later sociological studies. Starting from this observation, an attempt is made at a concise yet broad overview of the place of emotion in sociological knowledge, both in the latest theoretical approaches and in the methodological strategies of social research.
