Description & Specifications

A collection of essays by Valéry on three artists who were central to him. Paul Valéry had a lasting fascination with Leonardo, Poe, and Mallarmé, and his essays on these artists are among his most important writings. This volume presents these essays as well as extensive selections on these figures from Valéry's Notebooks. Valéry's Leonardo and Poe were almost pure inventions. He was not so interested in their works as in their minds—“the living and thinking systems that produced these works.” In the essays on Mallarmé, Valéry wrote about a man he knew and loved, and a poet he deeply admired, but he fully recognized the difference between himself and Mallarmé. The Collected Works of Paul Valéry, the first comprehensive edition of the author in English, features new translations, the original French side-by-side for the poetic works, and editorial notes.
