Description & Specifications

"The historic-philosophical position of this work can be summarized as follows. Dialectics, as it was made widely known by Hegel, linking it with his name, was formed on the basis of a monistic worldview or a unifying philosophy, which also embodied the strong monistic tendencies of late German Enlightenment and at the same time was compelled to carefully engage with the epistemological problems posed by Kant and Fichte. This unifying philosophy, already in a concise and systematic form, is the product of the autonomous intellectual effort of Hölderlin in the years 1795–1799. Schelling... partly adopts and partly discovers himself, through his personal confrontation with Fichte, this unifying philosophy in the years 1801–1802, in order to simultaneously transform it into a programmatic construction based on the triadic schema. Hegel's contribution to the formation of this first, but decisive, form of dialectics must be considered minimal, if it exists at all. Because his writings from the Frankfurt period constitute an exposition and application of the principles of Hölderlin's unifying philosophy, while his early treatises in Jena echo the meantime fully developed Schellingian version of it. Hegel's independent philosophical development, which had significant consequences also for the form of dialectics, begins only after 1802, with the decision that the Absolute can be known or that Essence is Subject — a decision that meant the break with the common, until then accepted by Hegel, belief of Hölderlin and Schelling that the Absolute cannot be known and that knowledge and thought constitute per definitionem divisions and abstractions."
