Description

Description

The democratic and social gains of the post-dictatorship era are under threat. Their guarantees, from Article 16 of the Constitution to the confidentiality of communications, are systematically violated in practice. However, even their mere preservation in the constitutional text is bothersome. The economic and political power wants to be unrestrained and believes the time has come to impose it.

This development urgently raises the question: Who decides our fate? Since the time of the American and French revolutions, constitutions have answered "we, the people." The elites are no longer satisfied with merely undermining this answer in practice. They seek to strip it of all meaning. For them, the answer must be "we, the wealthy."

We have every reason in the world to orient ourselves in the completely opposite direction. Towards changes that will take away wealth and opportunities for political influence from capital and strengthen social rights and the rights of collective action. Which will treat the increasing influence of elites on political decision-making as a major problem with systemic roots.

In this context, the confrontation sparked by the constitutional revision concerns not only experts or an enlightened minority. It concerns the fate of all of us. It is nothing but the institutional aspect of a broader discussion about the present and future of our society.
