This book is the author's doctoral thesis, completed at Harvard in 1971 and until today unpublished in English and untranslated into Greek. Despite its academic age, Skiotis's work continues to be considered one of the most significant scholarly approaches to Ali Pasha and is perhaps the most comprehensive study examining his relationship with the Greek Revolution. Based on numerous primary sources and secondary literature in at least eight languages (including Ottoman Turkish, Russian, and Albanian), Skiotis's book places Ali Pasha within the Greek, Ottoman, and Balkan context with remarkable accuracy and sheds light on a highly interesting aspect of the Greek struggle for independence in an unusually detailed analytical manner.
