Description

"What do you intend to do with the world that is opening up before you and that you will soon face as an adult? To change it, to get to know it, or to understand it?" her teacher asked him on the last day of his high school attendance.

"All three," Kostas had answered spontaneously then, without a second thought.

Kostas Gyftodimos, son of a reputable notary, was born in Lime, Euboea in 1905. As a university student in Medicine, he experienced prison and exile due to his membership in the Communist Party. However, he quickly moved beyond his country's borders and lived in Vienna, Berlin, Paris, and Moscow. In 1945, he traveled to New York and San Francisco for the founding conference of the United Nations.

Exiled to Sifnos and Kimolos by Metaxas' dictatorship, he escaped when the German troops entered to join the Resistance, where he was given the pseudonym "Karagiorgis".

He was the chief captain of ELAS Thessaly during the Occupation, a Minister of the Provisional Democratic Government, and a Brigadier General of the Democratic Army during the Civil War, during which he was wounded by a landmine explosion.

He was the director of Rizospastis during the December events and the period of white terror, pioneering innovative methods in the newspaper's operation. He disagreed with the Lausanne, Caserta, and Varkiza Agreements.

After the defeat in the Civil War, he was considered by many to be the most suitable "successor" to Zacharias.

No one, however, could have imagined his inglorious end.
